Grandma Moses

DON'T THINK IT'S EVER TOO LATE!

"Grandma Moses Goes to the Big City"

This painting hung on the wall of my other grandmother. This Gram stayed home. She did not take off on a sail boat like my other one.

She took care of all of us grandkids. She had us over on weekends. Shopping for school clothes. Sunday drives in her car Esmerelda. Candy + ice cream.

She lived for her family.

She was not into travel, art and culture, but this one little painting hung on her wall, above a light switch. It was almost automatic: When she turned off the lights that she'd say,

"That's a Grandma Moses. She didn't start painting till she was 91."

Once a year Grandma went to New York City with her friend Mable. On a bus. She was so nervous and excited she never slept the night before. This Gram didn't give a shit about the full moon. She wore high heels until diabetic neuropathy forced her to stop.

A family friend was a buyer at Saks. He treated her like a queen when she went to "the big city." Her one day of the year. No wonder she was giddy to the point of needing copious Tums and bathroom visits.

I wonder if she dreamed of starting something new when the family finally grew up. Alzheimer's took her at 81 so we'll never know.

If she did have other dreams, she never let on. She was the happiest person I ever knew, funny and full of love, making the best of everything. Life was magic around her. That's what she made it.
